The
Northwest School Sportcourt is a playground on a small lot connecting
the Northwest School and their new dormitory. The requirement for
a conditional use permit, and the adjacency of historic buildings
resulted in involvement of city agencies, local community groups,
and neighbors in the design review process. The project incorporated
concrete, brick, fiberglass columns, steel and handmade tiles. The
fiberglass columns, in connection with a steel entablature and pediment,
form entry gates to the playground which reflect architectural features
of the surrounding buildings. The tiles, made by students in the
school, give the students an opportunity for expression and become
a gift of art and creativity to the community. |
