Black
Residence, Lopez Island
This shingle residence with an encompassing roof recalls the form
of the grand old barns of early Lopez Island. Sited on an exposed
peninsula in Fish Bay, the house has exceptional views. Living activities
are focused on the second level in the main hall, which takes advantage
of the southwest view to San Juan Channel from the sun space, and
the northeast view toward Fish Bay from the deck. The house hovers
3 feet above ground on concrete piers to minimize disturbance to
the grasslands, and safely out of the reach of the occasional winter
flood tides.
