Barrier-Free
Kitchen Remodel
The challenge of this project was to remodel
a modest home on a tight budget to enable the client to perform
everyday cooking tasks as well as to entertain graciously from a
wheelchair. Three counter heights; 36" at dishwasher, 33"
at sink and stove, and a 27" table accommodate different needs.
The pull out board under the side hinged oven is at the 27"
height of the table top. The baking center is covered by doors which
slide completely out of the way for working and provides a roll
out work top for increased counter area and knee space. The central
support of the table allows a wheelchair to pull up to any side.
This kitchen remodel for wheelchair independence and convenience
won a citation in the 1993 National AIA "Easy Access Housing
Design Awards Program." |
